Female Bust

about the image

The female bust from Jhunsi in Uttar Pradesh dates back to the Kushana period (1st-3rd century CE). Kaniska I, the third ruler of the Kushana dynasty, developed the empire to its fullest extent. He was a great patron of Buddhism, and Buddhist art is known to have been tolerant of other religious faiths. During his reign, fine art, architecture, and coinage flourished in the major centres of Mathura and Gandhara in the Indian subcontinent.
