The northern part of Delhi that has been highlighted on this map was once occupied by the British who set up their military camps in this area in the middle of the nineteenth century.
This lush, forested area, lies close to the old walled city of Shahjahanabad, and therefore was an area of strategic importance - especially during the events of the First War of Independence in 1857. Monuments that are remnants of this time can still be spotted today.

historic cities history
North Delhi’s history is different from what the rest of the city has experienced. While in other parts of Delhi, medieval kings conquered and established new cities, North Delhi rose to prominence only after the advent of the British, who began to settle in this area after the events of 1857. In 1913, when plans for the new Imperial capital of Delhi were being made, North Delhi was one of the four sites to be considered. However, due to various issues and the added cost of construction, plans changed, and the foundation stone was laid at Raisina Hill - where the Imperial structures stand today.
