Birbal

body

Birbal, originally named Mahesh Das, was born in 1528 as the third son of Ganga Das and Anabha Davito, both of whom belonged to a family of bards and minstrels. He became a trusted advisor to Emperor Akbar and was one of the esteemed “Navratnas” (Nine Jewels) of his court. The term “Navratna” or “Nao Ratna” referred to the nine most distinguished courtiers of his reign, among whom Birbal was often considered the brightest. His sharp intellect and wisdom earned him great recognition, making him a legendary figure over time. He entered Akbar’s court between 1556 and 1562, and within a decade, the emperor honoured him with the title of “Kavi Rai” (Hindi Poet Laureate). More than just a courtier, Birbal shared a deep friendship with Akbar. For three decades, he remained one of the emperor’s closest and most valued companions, receiving immense respect and admiration from Akbar. With his sharp wit and quick intellect, Birbal rose from a modest background to a position of great prominence in Akbar’s court. The deep mutual respect and affection between the emperor and his trusted advisor have become legendary in Indian history.

However, he held tightly to the cloth bag containing the emerald ring given to him by the emperor and remained determined.

By evening, he arrived at the grand fort on the Yamuna River, feeling small before its massive gates. Summoning his courage, Mahesh Das walked up to a soldier and said, "I have come to meet the emperor. He invited me to his court." The guard eyed him skeptically, noting his dusty feet and simple attire. "Oh, the emperor invited you? To the Diwan-i-Khas, no doubt, where he meets his highest nobles?" he mocked. Passersby stopped to watch, amused by the young villager’s predicament.

But Mahesh Das remained calm. "Perhaps," he replied boldly, "and I have his ring to prove it." Reaching into his bag, he revealed the intricately crafted emerald ring.

The guard hesitated, taken aback by its authenticity. A learned pundit in the crowd remarked, "That is no ordinary ring. You should let the young man in."

Unwilling to lose the opportunity to assert his authority, the guard smirked and said, "I will allow you inside on one condition—you must promise to give me half of whatever the emperor gives you."

The crowd murmured, recognising the guard’s greed. But Akbar, glancing up, recognised him instantly. "Ah, Mahesh Das! I am pleased you have come. Ask for anything your heart desires, and it shall be yours."

To everyone’s astonishment, Mahesh Das responded, "Jahanpanah, if it pleases you, my greatest wish is to receive fifty lashes of the whip."

Gasps filled the hall. "Has he lost his mind?" people murmured.

Intrigued by his request, Akbar asked, "Why would you ask for such a strange gift?"

Mahesh Das bowed and explained, "Before allowing me into the palace, the guard made me promise to give him half of whatever I receive.
