Pravesh: Rite to Passage
Pravesh is a richly illustrated catalogue that explores the multifaceted world of doors and gates across India—not merely as architectural elements but also as potent symbols embedded in the country’s cultural, spiritual, and aesthetic fabric. The volume delves into their sacred value, examining how thresholds function as markers of transition in rituals, myths, and legends. From grand temple gateways to modest domestic entrances, Pravesh reflects on how doors and gates embody initiation, protection, and transformation. It also highlights their aesthetic symbolism, regional styles, and presence in popular imagination—whether in cinema, literature, or festivals. As both material culture and cultural metaphor, doors and gates become sites of storytelling, spirituality, and identity in this evocative publication.

The Indian Culture Portal (ICP) played a key role in the event by coordinating seminars and ensuring the smooth delivery of keynote addresses throughout the Biennale. In addition to event facilitation, ICP contributed significantly to the intellectual substance of the Biennale by conceptualising, designing, and curating three major thematic publications—Pravesh, Sthapatya and Samatva—as part of a larger set of seven curated works. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi unveiled all these publications at the Biennale.multi video
