Before the Harappan settlement in Lothal, the town was not empty land. It sustained an indigenous population that produced a distinct ceramic assemblage called Micaceous Red Ware, characterized by a fine reddish slip surface embedded with shiny mica particles. The Harappans arrived peacefully in the town of Lothal during the mature phase of their culture, with no evidence of violence or demographic upheaval. The already settled local population adapted to the Harappan tools, ceramics, and techniques introduced by the Harappans after their arrival. The frequent recurrence of floods in the town necessitated urban planning to ensure its protection.
Lothal made a remarkable contribution in Harappan engineering techniques. Its engineers were pioneers in the construction of artificial docks for berthing ships, representing one of the most advanced examples of maritime engineering in the third millennium BCE. What further sets Lothal apart from other Harappan settlements is that, unlike the urban centres of the Indus Valley, where the civilization declined, the Harappan cultural tradition continued to survive in Gujarat for a longer duration.

Phase I
Archaeologists divide Period A at Lothal into four phases based on structural remains. Early Phase I levels reflect indigenous dominance, with Micaceous Red Ware vastly outnumbering Harappan Red Ware and Buff Ware. Later levels of Phase I, however, show a marked increase in Harappan ceramics. The presence of mature Indus artefacts in Phase I, like steatite seals, long chert blades, steatite and copper beads, and forms like dish-on-stands and goblets, confirms that Harappan influence arrived at Lothal during the civilization's mature phase. The town was hit by a severe flood by the end of Phase I, necessitating better planning of the town to protect it from natural disasters.
,Phase II
After the flood, Phase II brought major fixes. Workers repaired and enlarged the outer wall: they used mud-bricks on the south, west, and east sides, and burnt-bricks on the north side, closest to the dangerous nullah stream. Houses were rebuilt higher on mud-brick platforms of different heights to stay safe from water. With sea trade growing fast, they needed a place for ships to dock. Thus, a massive artificial dock was constructed, showing incredible skill in marine engineering. In this phase, new S-shaped pots appeared for the first time.
People of Lothal were doing very well economically during Period II. This shows in their large houses, imported goods, and factories. Sea-borne trade reached its zenith, with Lothal exchanging goods with places like Susa and Ur, and islands in the Persian Gulf. Archaeologists found a shell instrument in Lothal, comparable to a modern cross-staff, used to measure angles, thereby proving their advanced skills in maritime navigation. New customs also emerged during this period, such as the ritual of joint burials and animal sacrifices. Another flood struck the city in Phase II, which damaged the platforms, on top of which structures were built.
,Phase III
Around 2000 BCE, Lothal experienced another catastrophic flood. The floodwaters inundated the entire town, causing extensive destruction to both its residential and public areas. Key civic structures, including the dockyard, acropolis, and warehouse, also suffered severe damage, disrupting the town's role as an important centre of maritime trade and administration. Archaeological excavations have revealed thick deposits of 4 to 5 feet (1.2-1.5 m) of silt and flood debris covering structures and streets, bearing testimony to the town’s destruction by flood at the end of Phase III. The repeated flooding appears to have weakened the settlement's economic and administrative importance. Although the site continued to be occupied for some time, its urban character gradually declined. Faced with the devastation and recurring threat of floods, many inhabitants abandoned Lothal and relocated to safer inland settlements.
,Phase IV
In Phase IV, some residents returned once floodwaters receded. However, they made no effort to remove debris or raise platforms for better flood protection. Construction quality declined sharply: public drains for wastewater disappeared, baths were poorly paved, buildings sprawled without rules, and streets narrowed from encroachments, all signs of civic neglect. The warehouse stayed unrepaired. Meanwhile, the river flowing along Lothal's western edge silted up its original channel, shifted its course about one mile to the east, and blocked ship access to the dock via the northern inlet. As a result, a new channel was dug in the eastern embankment for smaller vessels.
Lothal’s merchants made determined efforts to revive commerce amid adversity. They established factories producing copper and bronze implements, alongside specialized workshops crafting gemstone and shell beads. In Phase IV, workers built a bead factory on flood debris near the Acropolis. It had an open courtyard, a raised platform with a covered gallery, and a few rooms for the workers. Coppersmiths melted imported copper ingots and shaped them into tools.
