Towards the northern edge of the Harappan town of Lothal stands a large brick-built structure enclosing a trapezoidal basin, conventionally identified as the dockyard. The embankment walls measure approximately 716 feet on the western side, 705 feet 6 inches on the eastern side, 117 feet on the south, and 123 feet on the north. A wharf, intended for the loading and unloading of commodities, was constructed adjoining the northern wall of the dockyard. To regulate the water level within the basin, a spillway was built in the southern embankment, allowing excess water to drain out during periods of high tide or flooding. Constructed around 2350 BCE, the dockyard remained in excellent condition until a major flood affected Lothal circa 2000 BCE. Following this flood, repairs were undertaken, and certain structural modifications were carried out. Interestingly, a public drain that had earlier discharged wastewater into the dock through an opening in the western wall was sealed by the construction of a blocking wall. In its original layout, access for vessels appears to have been provided through the northern wall. However, subsequent changes in the course of the river after the flood necessitated the creation of a new inlet, approximately 23 feet wide, in the eastern wall. Around 1900 BCE, Lothal was struck by another catastrophic flood that destroyed both the dockyard and the settlement. Notably, no attempt was made thereafter to reconstruct the dock, marking a decisive end to its use. The high level of engineering expertise attained by the inhabitants of Lothal is evident in the ingenious mechanisms they employed to regulate the inflow and outflow of water within the dock, effectively accommodating the fluctuations of high and low tides. The function of this structure has long been at the centre of archaeological debate, particularly concerning Lothal’s role as a major node in Harappan maritime trade. While many scholars interpret the basin as a tidal dockyard, others argue that it may have served as a large water tank. This controversy is partly fueled by the extensive use of kiln-fired bricks in its construction materials, which were not commonly employed even in the important architectural features of the Acropolis, suggesting a structure of exceptional importance. According to the dockyard hypothesis, vessels would have sailed upstream from the Arabian Sea along an ancient channel of the Bhogava River, a tributary of the Sabarmati, and entered the dock during high tide. If accepted, this interpretation underscores Lothal’s strategic location and its participation in long-distance trade networks of the Harappan civilisation.

In 1954, while carrying out a careful survey of villages and ancient mounds across Gujarat, a small field team made a discovery that would change our understanding of India’s past: the mound of Lothal. Earlier work at Rangpur, a site 32 miles south-west of Lothal, had suggested that the advanced Harappan civilization, a highly organised urban culture that flourished across northwest India and Pakistan more than 5000 years ago, might have reached the Saurashtra region, but clear proof was still lacking. The surveyors set out to follow the most likely route the Harappans would have used into the peninsula: the low, fertile plains drained by the Sabarmati River and its tributaries.

The work was far from easy. The team had to wade through marshes and knee‑deep water, and progress was often slow. Local people helped them, most notably the team’s persistent driver, Baburao Kadam, and a local, Mehpat Singh, who led the way across waterlogged fields to a low mound near the village of Laxmipura, locally known as Lothal. On the surface of the mound, the team found broken pottery, beads, and other fragments that did not match later historic periods; instead, they bore the hallmarks of Harappan craft and technology. These surface finds made it clear that Lothal was a much older settlement linked to the Harappan civilization.

That chance discovery at a humble village mound opened the door to later excavations that revealed Lothal’s well‑planned town, its workshops, and its role as an ancient port, bringing to life a long‑lost chapter of India’s past.
