Cave type
The smaller of the caityagrḥas from the Later phase, this cave is 46 feet 4 inches by 23 feet 7 inches. It consists of a porch, hall with 17 pillars and the stūpa at the apse.
Period
The first caityagrḥa to be made in the Later phase, the cave has sculpted panels depicting narrative Buddhist stories.
Elements
The cave also has a Nāgarāja shrine in the porch. The Nāgas are powerful deities in Buddhism who often act as guardians and benefactors. The porch has narrative sculptures of Dipankara and Rāhula. Inside the cave, the stūpa has a Buddha image - the Buddha is portrayed as a spiritual sovereign.
Patron
The patron of this cave is Dharādipa, who had realised the impermanent nature of the material world after the premature death of his younger brother. He began to live a spiritual life dedicated to charity towards all those in need including the sangha.
