03 FEBRUARY USTAD ALLA RAKHA (1919 to 2000)
Tabla Maestro Ustad Alla Rakha Khan Qureshi was born on 29 April 1919 in Ghagwal village, Jammu and Kashmir. He left home at a young age to pursue his passion for music, and his lineage can be traced to the Punjab and Patiala gharanas. Ustad Alla Rakha mastered the art of tabla and played and accompanied many well-known performers like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Allauddin Khan, Vilayat Khan, and Ali Akbar Khan. In the 1960s, he, along with Pandit Ravi Shankar, took Indian classical music to the West, and they both played a pivotal role in raising worldwide awareness of the tabla and the sitar. The legacy of Ustad Allah Rakha lives on through his three percussionist sons, Zakir, Fazal, and Taufiq. Ustad Allah Rakha was awarded the Padma Shri in 1977 by the Govt. of India. He passed away on 03 February 2000.
