01 FEBRUARY ALLAH JILAI BAI (1902 to 1992)
Born on 01 February 1902, Allah Jilai Bai was a legendary folk singer who hailed from Bikaner in Rajasthan. She was born into a family of singers that performed traditional Rajasthani folk music. It is said that her aunts were famous singers of their time. Her initial music lessons were under Ustad Hussain Baksh Khan, and later on, she was taught by Achhan Maharaj. By the age of 10, she had already become a court singer in the Durbar of Maharaja Ganga Singh. The Maharaja was so impressed that she was given the honour of singing solo in the Durbars. Allah Jilai Bai was well versed in Maand, Thumri, Khayal, and Dadra. One of her best-known pieces is Kesaria Balam. She received numerous awards and accolades, including the Padma Shri (1982) and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1988). Allah Jilai Bai passed away on 03 November 1992.
