27 JULY DR APJ ABDUL KALAM (1931 to 2015)

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, a space scientist and statesman, was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. From selling newspapers at a young age to becoming the 11th President of India, Dr Kalam’s life has been truly inspirational. His association with India’s space and missile development program earned him the name ‘Missile Man.’ Dr Kalam was sworn in as the 11th President of India on 25 July 2002. He was called the “People’s President” because of his erudition and simplicity, and his popularity cut across all age groups. In 2015, the United Nations decided to observe his birthday as ‘World Students’ Day.’ Dr Kalam, the visionary, was also a teacher, scientist, writer, and poet. He was awarded all the top three civilian awards, the last being the highest, the Bharat Ratna, in 1997. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam passed away on 27 July 2015.
