05 FEBRUARY GURU RAVIDASS JAYANTI
Born in the holy land of Varanasi, Guru Ravidassji was a thinker, socio-cultural reformer, traveller, spiritual figure, and most importantly, a humanist who dedicated his whole life to the eradication of the caste system. Being the son of a cobbler, he had been subjected to discrimination in his early years. Widely known as Raidass, Guru Ravidassji was a prominent figure in the Bhakti Movement, which started in North India around the 15th century. His belief in one God and his religious poems won him, numerous followers. About 41 of his poems have been included in the religious text of the Guru Granth Sahib. Apart from the Sikhs, Meera Bai, a revered figure in Hindu spiritualism also regarded Guru Ravidassji as her spiritual Guru. Today, many devotees have adopted the teachings of Guru Ravidassji. In 2023, 5th February has been earmarked as Guru Ravidass Jayanti.
