27 JANUARY NIKHIL BANERJEE (1931 to 1986)
Pandit Nikhil Ranjan Banerjee was an Indian classical sitarist who was born in the year 1931. Known to be a quiet and austere musician, Nikhil Banerjee trained under the legendary Ustad Allaudin Khan for quite a few years. Apart from being a very fine musician, the fact, that he developed his own very distinct style of playing was one of his biggest accomplishments. It is said that there was a spiritual quality in his music, and with every concert, he set a new benchmark. Today, he is regarded as one of the three greatest sitarists of the 20th century, along with Pt. Ravi Shankar and Vilayat Khan. Nikhil Banerjee was awarded the Padma Shri in 1968. He had an untimely death on 27 January 1986.
