19 MARCH ACHARYA J B KRIPALANI (1888 to 1982)

Jivatram Bhagwandas Kripalani, popularly known as Acharya Kripalani, was born on 11 November 1888 in Hyderabad in the Sindh province of Pakistan. Besides being a close associate of Gandhiji, he was an Indian independence activist, politician, and educator. Before he got involved with the Freedom Movement, he dedicated several years to teaching. While teaching at the Gujarat Vidyapith in 1922, he earned the moniker ‘Acharya.’ Due to his active participation in the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Quit India Movement, he faced several jail terms. He was a member of numerous committees in the Constituent Assembly of India. At the time of Independence, Acharya was the President of the Indian National Congress (INC). However, ideological differences with Nehru led him to resign from the party in 1950. Subsequently, he formed his own political entity, the Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party. Acharya passed away on 19 March 1982. His autobiography, ‘My Times,’ was posthumously published in 2004.
