Chyabrung in Sikkim

Material: wood, leather

The Chyabrung is an indigenous drum of the Limboo community of Sikkim, and part of their traditional and cultural identification. Legend has it that the Almighty God, Tagera Ningwaphnis, created the earth and man. The creation of man came about through a woman, Tigenjungoa, who gave birth to twins, one a human baby and the other a tiger cub. The man-brother, Namasami, made the Chyabrung, using the skin of his bestial sibling. Whenever the sound of the Chyabrung drum resounds in the air, these brothers are remembered. As male members dance, they remind all around them that good always triumphs over evil.
